Ukraine: War, Culture, and Music

Join the Ukrainian community at the University of Pittsburgh for a special evening celebrating Ukrainian culture. It will feature renowned concert pianist and Ukrainian music historian, Dr. Taras Filenko (Pitt Music Ph.D.).

Dr. Filenko and Jennifer Orchard (Pittsburgh Symphony) will perform Michael Minard's, "Ukraine Triptych for Piano and Violin." Completed in March of last year, this is possibly the first American piece honoring Ukraine to be written after the February 24, 2022 invasion.

Ukrainian students currently studying at the University of Pittsburgh will sing folks songs, which have inspired Ukrainian composers with their harmonies and motifs and provide vital historical memory during challenging times.

This concert presents a unique opportunity to experience Ukrainian music and poetry. It will feature classical, romantic, and modern music by Ukrainian composers. The event will begin with refreshments and an opportunity to learn about Ukraine-focused academic, cultural, and humanitarian projects at Pitt and in Pittsburgh.

A Ukrainian Refugee Assistance Event

UCHI’s Circle of Friends Presents “A Ukrainian Refugee Assistance Event”

Ukrainian Cultural and Humanitarian Institute is sponsoring a Ukrainian Refugee Assistance Event. The networking event, which is part of UCHI’s Ukrainian Refugee Information Exchange Program, will take place on Thursday, March 30, 2023, beginning at 6:30 PM at the Carnegie Bourgh Building in the Council Chambers Room. The "no charge" monthly event is open to the public to attend. Bi-lingual individuals will be present to assist attendees with questions.

The Ukrainian Refugee Information Exchange consists of two parts: the in-person monthly networking events and an online refugee resource database. The March 30, 2023, event will include information from the following:

• PA Women Work will attend and provide information on how they are able to help the Ukrainian Refugees coming to the Pittsburgh Area.

• A Representative from Duquesne Light CARES will be onsite to explain how their program works.

• An update on the UCHI online refugee database resource, how to access & utilize the information.

• Potential employment opportunities and information will be presented by Stanley Steemer and other companies that are being finalized at this time.

• Representatives from different organizations that are available to attend discuss how they can help along with local Ukrainian religious and community organizations.

• UCHI’s “Welcome to the USA” booklets will be available for purchase. The Ukrainian-language publication contains information vital for integration into American society and offers ways to more effectively involve recent Ukrainian immigrants in the established Ukrainian-American community.

In addition to the refugee networking items, UCHI will have information from our Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief Fund available. The fund was created to accept monetary donations in order to provide grants for humanitarian aid arising from the 2022 Russian Federation military invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine. The Fund’s purpose is to provide humanitarian aid, immigration, and relocation assistance to further the safety and wellbeing of Ukrainian affected persons, both within and without Ukraine and the United States, including all related and incidental purposes. One of the main humanitarian projects is funding for the “Warm Hands” Art Therapy Rehabilitation Program for Orphans, Displaced, & Disadvantaged Children in Ukraine.

The UCHI Circle of Friends monthly Ukrainian Refugee Networking Events are made possible by a grant from the Ukrainian Community Foundation of Philadelphia, a charitable foundation established by Ukrainian Selfreliance Federal Credit Union (UKRFCU).
